Sorry that I intervene here, my only written source (a German book about fightings on the River Danube) and searching via google for the 205 whatever, strengthen my point of view that the 205 whatever of the RAF was part of an US AF. (whatever the number was)

Can anyone give me the operation name of Mining the Danube from 8th/9th April 1944 till October 1944 by the 205th RAF Bomber Group/15th US Air Force.
As I have written it in a different forum.
Also my post, before my big computer crash a few years ago.
(So I had much more sources for my research)

... throughout the late winter, spring and summer of 1944, 205 Group (of which 178 Sqdn was a part) flew as part of the 15th US Airforce, possibly the only RAF formation ever to fly under the operational control of another country?

We came under the 15th US Air Force operationally and this had the rather odd result that anyone getting an award had his citation countersigned by the American Commanding General.
From a hompage Reflections of 205 Group.

The problem, why I'm riding on this details is, after researching the topic River Danube during the WWII for over a decade I'm going to write some articles, later on mybe a book.
That's why I'm so keen on this fact-bits.
