No good answer, but the digits looks like 638 or 658 to me, but that includes very much hesitation on my part.

I am not even sure what aircraft part I am looking at. It seems to be a part of the engine cowling or something like that. Did the Germans actually put the aircraft's Bestellnummer there? Could it be some kind of WNr?

I was also interested in your connection between Typ D.6 and the LVG B.II.
I know that Grosz called the B.I Typ D.IV, but that is about as far as I go. I suppose LVG had their own designations for their aircraft (early Eindeckers were called E.I and up), so it is logic they called their Doppeldeckers D.I and up. Is there a list of LVG designations somewhere?
