LW losses on Maintenon-Rambouillet 16 August 1944

On this date the 353rd FS encountered about 70 Fw 190 near Maintenon. During the fight that followed the eight P-51 shot down over a dozen Fw190s losing at least two aircraft in return (1/Lt Dahlberg and CE Brown - both of whom survived and claimed a totoal of five kills between them).

This fight seems to be confused with an earlier one with JG26 where the 354th claimed two Fw190 and lost two in return. Given the size of the German losses I expected to encounter a similar record among LW casualties but only JG27 flying Bf109s suffer signicant losses to P-51 in that area.

Could the American pilots have mistaken their opponents in this case. One source states the American squadron fought with Bf109s.
