Re: FW200 as missile carrier
According to Air Ministry Weekly Intelligence Summary No. 228 of 15.01.1944, the first sortie to be flown by a FW 200 eqipped with the Hs 293 on operations took place on 28.12.1943 with FW 200C-4 W.Nr. 0189 F8+MR with Hptm. Wilhelm Dette (Staffelkapitän of 9./K.G.40) as commanding officer. It took off from Cognac at 06.30 hours together with three other FW 200. F8+MR was the only one to carry the Hs 293 (Kehl IV). On the return flight, one engine caught fire and the aircraft had to be ditched. The crew managed to get into their dinghy. The entire crew, except the radio operator, were later rescued by a british trawler and brought to UK.
According to my notes the Kehl IV conversions of the FW 200 were as follows
FW 200C-3 became FW 200C-6
FW 200C-4 became FW 200C-7
FW 200C-5 became FW 200C-8
The final production version of Focke-Wulf was the FW 200C-5. The others were conversions from already produced aircraft. The conversions were carried out by Dornierwerke Friedrichshafen (DW F).
