Further to your query, and as to the possible reason for this practice, another photo of W.Nr. 230 459 found by Michael Balss is even more intriguing : http://www.americanairmuseum.com/med...8yGmClPZb6RTVU

You can clearly see there was another W.Nr. (?) 581 painted at the base of the tail... I'm at a loss here.
