I believe the word goes much further back than the Vikings.
I also believe the British today has kept the old meaning, ie a small settlement, while in Scandinavia it has become synonomous with a very small single living place. Cottage style.
Another favourite word of mine is Skyfall (now famous via a James Bond movie). That word goes all the way back to Ragnarok, and that
is ancient....
