Respectfully, all combatants were expected to put their lives on the line during the war. I do chafe at book descriptions that try to tell me what to think and feel about a culture that during the war, held certain beliefs and principles. Why was unconditional surrender demanded by the Americans? Who supervised the writing of the Japanese Constitution post-war?
