Casari says this was the "second" Wright A for the Army. The first one seems by some to have been the one in which Lt Selfridge was killed when flown by Orville Wright.
So this one, which was in fact the first one accepted by the US Army, became SC No 1.
When seen here it had been modified/rebuilt as a Model B (during Nov and Dec 1910).
Seems it was damaged before being stored for the winter 1910-11, because in Jan 1911 money was required for repairs....and fundraising was made to the public! The SC was obviously very short of money or perhaps more likely didn't want it any more so nothing really came out of all that. In May 1911 the aircraft was donated to the Smithsonian Institution.
This photo (undated) was probably taken just before the hand over.
