It could be set off once someone came aboard or tried to move the aircraft. I have a photo of two German bombers neatly split in half as a result of this.

AFAIR they installed demolition charges called "gebalte Ladung"on board of the He 111 and the Ju 88 . These could be used to destroy the a/c when they belly landed it behind enemy lines.
