He was taken off operations 15 Feb 44 after 269 combat missions of which 156 were against UK. His successor Maj Hanns Heise (364 combat missions) only lasted a month and a half before becoming a staff officer before he was replaced by Maj Wilhelm Rath who was killed on operations 22 May 1944
