There was only one sortie from SCHARNHORST that day (Ar.196 "T3+BH" from 1./196, crew Ludwig/Reuter) to seek some sunken submarine in qu. 5697. Fly from 10.00 to 12.02 - no signs of sub was found. Second sortie of same machine was cancelled due bad weather. Source: KTB of Bordfliegerstaffel 1./196, NARA T-1022, roll 3359.
Equally nothing in SCHARNHORST's KTB. There we can found a statement, that
sub was sunk by GNEISENAU's airplane 16.6.40. Indeed, a plane started in 00.00 and downed 02.32 reports about sinking CLYDE-type sub in qu. 5659r, 22 miles north of Halten Light. Alas i don't know planes code and crew.
PS - 19.6.40 plane from GNEISENAU indeed attacked sub almost in same area and in same time (qu. 5697, Halten Bank), flight 00.00-02.15.
