Michel,

I have researched this question extensively, as my relative was a gunner on B-24 41-23729 on 18 October 1943. I strongly believe the Spitfire claim was a clerical error when the claim records were translated after the war. The claim location was 05 Ost S UK-TK, which is over France, however I am very confident that it should have been 05 Ost N UK-TK, which is over the North Sea, exactly where the bomber was last sighted. The "S" and "N" error, placed the claim roughly 600 km directly south of the actual location. The letter from Robert Roller as well as an account of the mission from Gerhard Thyben place JG 3 over the North Sea, which strongly rules out any action over France. I hope this helps clear up any confusion regarding the claim of the Spitfire.

Best regards,
Joe
