The OZ perspective:

I pre-ordered a copy of War Prizes from Book Depository on Thursday, 16 June, 2022*. I was charged AUS$43.73 (post free), which I very promptly paid with my credit card, and hastily forgot about it.
The book was delivered to my Post Office box in OZ, on Wednesday, 2 November, 2022. No problems.
I'm not suggesting this should be done in all cases, but in this instance, it worked fine.
There are risks.

* Book Depository quoted 138 days to go at the time. They are now asking AUS$106.40!!!
