Re: JG 77 victories
I know about the up coming book (or probably books?). Can't wait for it.
But on I/JG 77, the time covered in the book is about the gruppe's 2nd iteration. In January 42 they became I/JG 5.
In May 42, they were on their 3rd life and were flying down south in Ukraine. At that time they were commanded (the freshly appointed) Heinz Baer. He made 12 claims in May. That is what I'm tryin. To find out. Apparently the Gruppe was spread out in several places, from Kharkiv to the Crimea. They were only joined together in one place at the end of the month, in Sarabus A/f, Crimea.
So I`m trying to figure out where exactly did Baer made his claims, Kharkiv area or the Crimea.
From the Loss Files I've been able to find I cannot find enough losses, or any losses (depending on the days) to substantiate all the claims made.
Where his claims were made is what makes me scratch my head. In that time frame, 16~20 May, in the Crimea the push the Kerch peninsula was over, the Germans had shifted their attention to Sevastopol, so the action had subsided, and most importantly the Soviet started their offensive in the Kharkiv area (on the 12th) that made the Germans quickly move III/JG 52, soon followed by II/JG 52, to that area (pulling them out of the Krimea). That makes me think that Baer (and possibly Gollob also, if flying witg III/JG 77) made those May claims there and not in the Krimea.
