Re: Dornier DO17 Crash Photo

Hello Leendert,

Many thanks for the link to the Canard Tafana Revue and a solution of the problem with the streetnames.

According to Canard Tafana revue dated April 2010 the streets were renamed : Rue Verte became Rue Guillaume Vanzeveren (location of the crash), Rue du Val became Rue de la Crolière (location of the graves)

The article in this publication (based on research done by D.Vandenbroucke, published in “Mémoires de la société d’Histoire de Mouscron et de la Région, tome IV”) mentions that the aircraft was shot down by British flak (situated near Rue du Bilemont) . Two airmen baled out of the plane, but as it as flying very low the chutes didn’t open. The two other died in the crashing plane.

When checking with Google maps one can still find a street called Rue Verte (= Groenestraat) , Rue Guillaume Vanzeveren, Rue du Val (= Dalstraat) and Rue de la Crolière.

Also checked “De Rouck – Toutes les rues de Wallonie et Bruxelles” (published in 1996) and it mentions : Rue Verte (in Luingne), Rue Guillaume Vanzeveren (in Mouscron), Rue du Val (in Mouscron) and Rue de la Crolière (in Luingne).

To be continued …

Best regards

Luc
