Re: Sergent Josef Hubacek

Hi Montana,

I have a different story.
Sgt Hubacek of GC III/3 was one of the fighter pilots escorting a bomb raid of 12 Leo451's of GB I/12 and II/12 to the Maastricht bridges across the Meuse and Albert channel.

A total of 21 Moranes from GC III/3 (3), the 3rd escadrille of GC II/6 (12) and the 4th escadrille (6) escorted the bombers. Over the target zone and then following south towards Namur the group was attacked by (as it seems) the full Gruppe I./JG1 since some 30 Bf109's are mentioned.
The Luftwaffe effectively shot down one Leo (No.46 at Granville close to St Trond) but another 4 were damaged and written off.

Three Moranes were shot down and crashed at Namur-Dave (No.202, S/Lt Rupied), Haut-le-Wastia on the west bank of the Meuse across Dinant (No. 67 Adj Leclercq) and at Marchovelette (Lt Clostres).

However, Sgt Hubacek was not shot down! He is said to be seriously hit in the arm and shoulder, but was nevertheless able to get his Morane back to Maubeuge, where the machine was written off.

Hope someone can confirm this.

Regards, Pieter
