Re: eBay: Allied intrest

One thing for sure, the plane in the second photo is well-maintained, cleaned and polished, unusual for that date (Sept. 44). No other markings apart from artwork and star (ie. none overpainted if she was with a FG). Also she still has the white nose and tail bands ordered in Feb. 1943; the visible last 3 of the serial (335, 535 or 835) fit 11 "D"s from D-RE to D-20 but couldn't find any connections to 4th FG. Many of Don Allen's paintings in 334th were on the centre cowl panel which could be transferred to a later plane, and also with a disc background. There were 7 known P-47s in the 4th FG with "Miss" in the name. But this style of lettering can be seen also in other FGs like 355th and 356th, but not widespread.
The unusual name is a reference to "Miscellanious" ie. a mixture of different things, maybe a P-47 and B-17s....it's a big airfield so probably a bomb group; unfortunately no markings visible on the B-17. Possibly a senior pilot flew her hence the extra-clean appearance.

Regards
Nick
