Ed----Post 3419. Only 3 B-17Gs shown here, all 463BG / Fifteenth AF; all from 775BS. If I remember right as the Group had no squadron identification a few (at least in the 773 / 775BSs) had the last number ie. 3 or 5, in a square on fin and left wing-tip. One with "3" on tail and wing was 44-6784.
In the photos 42-97912 is "Purple Heart Kid" damaged over Austria and salvaged. 42-97742 is a Pathfinder and survived. 44-6763 has the Group's late-war yellow rudder, not all planes marked up though; she survived.
It was quite common in the Fifteenth to decorate the vertical tails in various ways, 44-6880 and 44-6398 "Bucket Bunny" had their targets marked on there.
