The P-39s (with P-38 / P-40s) were escorting B-17s looking for Jap destroyers in the Solomons, met by group of float biplanes most likely F1M "Pete"s from seaplane tenders; total claims 13 shot down.
If you are interested in the early Thirteenth AF operations this is Study 35; claims for Jan.43 are on p. 267 listing type. Almost half the claims were by F4Fs.
