Did some sleuthing about, Social Security Death Indexes and such, and came up empty handed; no Robert Carlson matched his birthday that I could find. As I understand it, way back when, social security numbers did not come about until one applied, regardless of age . . . now-a-days newborns are signed up before they leave the hospital. I know my father did not get one until sometime in the 1950's . . . pretty far along since he was born in 1916. He had, of course, his USN service number, pretty much all he needed as social security funds were not drawn from his active duty pay. The USN switched identification numbers from service numbers to social security numbers in the late 1960's.

So, there's a possibility that Carlson never got an SSN and faded off the mortal coil fairly early without mention.
