Re: Infos/details about Wabash Cannonball III
Hi Frederic. Sorry for the delay. Lewis flew B-26s in the 22BG/Fifth AF in N. Guinea 1942, 2 named "Wabash Cannonball", before he transferred to Ninth AF.
"Wabash Cannonball" 40-1499 (HQ Sqn) written off after an air raid 17 Aug. 42.
"Wabash Cannonball II" 40-1517 (HQ then to 33BS flown by Lewis in Sept.); The HQ Sqn. was disbanded in Sept. and B-26s re-assigned. Scrapped in Australia Jan. 44, must have been worn out.
I think it's possible that "III" was flown by Lewis in training (in P-61s) after he moved back to the States; he was c/o 425NFS 10 Dec. 43 (Sqn. was activated 1 Dec. at Orlando FL.) until 10 Feb 45 then again from June 45.
