With great sadness I heard from the family of George Dunn that he passed away this morning, peacefully, at the age of 103.
He was my friend, and I will miss him. But I have many memories of happy times together.
George flew as a Halifax and Mosquito pilot with Bomber Command during the Second World War, flying 44 operations. His commitment and bravery was recognised with the award of a Distinguished Flying Cross, and in recent years he also received the Legion d’Honneur.
He was a great favourite at book signings and events, and worked tirelessly raising funds for numerous causes. He will also be remembered for his prominent role advocating for, and achieving, greater recognition for his fallen Bomber Command comrades. His warm nature, humble attitude, joy of life, and infectious laugh endeared him to so many. I know they will feel sadness but they will also feel privileged to have met and shared time with a great man.
The end of an era for me. I will miss you George!
