I know 10./JG2 is often credited for the sinking of HMS Berkeley, but they actually attacked HMS Calpe at this time.
Lead Jabo pilot Ltn Wagner supports the 10./JG2 claim by stating that his bomb hit the stern of a destroyer, leaving it shrouded in smoke, but this overlooks one important fact, namely as pictures of the crippled destroyer show, the attack on Berkeley didn’t result in a fire. There was a destroyer which was on fire at this time, but this was Calpe, which was attempting to extinguish the cordite fire around its No2 gun after a Ju88 attack. Add to this the information that the crew of Calpe reported being attacked by Fw190’s, whilst Berkeley's C/O Lt Yorke identifies his attacker as a Do217, then it is apparent that it was an unidentified Dornier which delivered the fatal blow to the Berkeley.
