Hello Snautzer,
according to Prien, only 36 German fighters were scrambled on combat missions and, of these, only 13 engaged the enemy. The entire JG 26 was not involved in defensive operations. The only combat sorties were flown by I./JG2 and II./JG 2 (which was unsuccessful), claiming two victories (only one was later confirmed) and one probable. Thus, no Bf 109s were airborne that day. Apparently, there is little doubt that Hohagen shot down Hall, especially since the location of the claim and the crash site match.
