The now available LC Volume 9 consists primarily of a wealth of photographs and documents about the LC's fighter pilots and their Bf 109s. It presents in full the reports of Joachim von Richthofen, who was responsible for the LC's technical reporting on Colonel von Richthofen's staff. Some of these reports from Tablada airfield near Seville have been reproduced internationally in abbreviated, fragmentary form, but never in their entirety. The Bf 109 [Me 109] became the standard fighter of the German Luftwaffe. Designed by Robert Lusser, the fighter first took to the skies on May 28, 1935. This aircraft still had many teething problems that had to be resolved in order to become a successful aircraft, with over 30,000 units built. The Spanish Civil War of 1936–1939 provided the perfect opportunity for real-world testing and the implementation of improvements.
The detailed reports and information compiled by Joachim von Richthofen II are indispensable for understanding the history of the Bf 109. Numerous photographs of the aircraft and the FBKs (Flying Command Vehicles) complete this book.
