Dear Jon,
Have you tried looking into the records for the Lifeboats in Portsmouth. Before the RAF ASR came into being the RNLI did a lot of 'recovery' work in the Channel?
Perhaps his brother knows whether it was a lifeboat, fishing vessel or Royal Navy ship that picked him up.
