Re: Gottfried Dulias
I heard a radio interview with Dulias a couple of months ago. I am not an expert, as many of the posters on this Forum are, but I have read most of the literature published in the English language on the subject. The interviewers were not experts.
Dulias said that he had fought Spitfires in the fall of 1944, but not American fighters, while stationed in "Northern Germany with JG 53." Despite being a novice, he brought down a Spitfire after a long dogfight. In early 1945, he was in Hungary and shot down "3 Ratas." Dulias said that the Russians "were throwing in everything," which explained the Ratas.
When asked if he had met anyone famous, he mentioned Erich Hartmann. Dulias said, "The only time I met Erich Hartmann was when taxiing out for a mission, Hartmann was landing. We waved to each other." Asked if he ever met Adolf Galland, Dulias said, "I never met Galland."
Dulias then said, "I met Gunther Rall 3 years ago. I had breakfast with him when Rall appeared in Washington DC." Rall must have enjoyed this. Dulias said that he was going to pick up Walter Schuck at the airport when Schuck came for an airshow in Reading, Pennsylvania. "Walter's English isn't so good," he said. Dulias then gave details about Schuck that were word for word out of Trevor and Constable's book.
Dulias told of his combat tactics while shooting down 5 planes in a 109. "I used the 3 cm cannon in the nose. I only fired one shot for each victory."
