Re: Victories by Italian,Rumanian and Hungarian Night Fighters

Hello guys,

The Hungarian Night Fighter Squadron didn’t score any night fighter victory. They got few daylight victory April of 1944:
03.04.1944. serg. Dezső Zsámboki pilot and Géza Sallós gunner flew by Me210 Ca1 shot one B-24 Liberator nearby Paks village. (Both o f them KIA when the escorting P-38 fighters attacked them).
After ten days: 13.04.1944. lt. György Bertalan and his gunner shot down one B-24 Liberator and one P-38 Lightning. Not confirmed.

I know just one night mission when lt. Arpad Papp pilot and his gunner end of Januar or Februar 1945 flew by Bf110-G4, they observerd one soviet Po-2, the enemy aircraft was very slowly and they couldn’t shoot down. After a few minute search they return to Wiener-Neustadt airfield.

Few thinks more:
My grandfather serg. Kalman Garai who served in the 5/1 Hungarian Night Fighter Squdron from the beginning to end of the WWII, he had few mission too.
Few alarm mission, when the enemy bombers attacked Hungary, he had to fly out from Budapest-Ferihegy and Tápiószentmárton airports to few secret airfields. (Péteri, Izsák, Szi-halom, Pusztavacs)
He had combat mission on 12th April 1944 flew by Me210, and 27th July 1944 flew by Fw-58.
Thanks Good he survived the war. He didn’t shot nobody in the air. The last months everybody wounted live without any hero’s mission.
Kind regards,

GaraiB
