Re: Nordhausen Fliegerhorst
Thanks John!
The coordinates you gave did indeed correspond with what I considered the most probable locations: after so much looking over old air bases you acquire a certain "flair", but the industrial area in Nordhausen and the Soviet Kaserne in Halberstadt made positive ident confusing to say the least!
As far as Beauvais is concerned this is a very interesting airbase because of the very large extent of the dispersal areas still existing (this is not the only one...) and the conservation of two types of hangar with their original roof:
- the T type at 49°27'45.21"N 2° 8'9.75"E for He-111 sized bombers (>33 m wide); other T-types exists like in Audembert 50°51'24.21"N 1°40'35.42"E (13,5 m for fighters like Me-109) or Rely 50°33'55.85"N 2°21'25.90"E (22 m for heavy fighters like Me 110).
- A very rare (because well preserved) 3-volumes hangar here: 49°27'22.71"N 2° 7'23.52"E
The original depth of this hangar is of its larger volume (to the SW).
This type of hangar was common; It can also be found in Brias (walls only).
