Are there any pictures of vehicles such as trucks and cars because these may have divisional insignia on them that might point towards Peter's unit.
If the pictures are demountable from the diary perhaps the photographer wrote some information on the back?
Was Peter in the Luftwaffe, Wehrmacht, Waffen SS or Kriegsmarine? His uniform would tell you this. His uniform would probably reveal his rank, and this would also help you.
