Great thread.

I too have been intrigued by the several 109s documented with lightly-colored three-part RV bands and a small black? horizontal “II. Gruppe” bars. And yes, I am guilty of being one of the first to misidentify one of them as being from II./JG 2. In AIRFOIL #1 (Winter, 1983), I illustrated G-10 WNr. 150816, Black 4+ -, found at at Bad Langensalza, as being from that unit. If Mr. Prien is correct and this form of marking was found on III./JG 300 Bf 109s, it would indeed be a most exciting discovery.

Finally, in the photo of 1+ - posted by Angantyr, it appears to me that the oil cover sheet metal has been peeled over the nose and we are seeing the port side. Correct me if I am wrong, but does not the oil filler hatch seem to be in the raised position? Note the distance between the hatch and the cooling scoop.
