428FS/474FG Mission, 17 Dec 44

I have been researching the subject mission at great length and need some help. The 428FS was on an armed recce that day and attacked a large number of motor transports 20 miles ENE of St. Vith, Belgium between 1510 and 1550 hours. During this time, they were attacked by two large groups of Fw190s, likely I./JG26 and IV./JG54. Although badly mauled, the 428th held their own.

The 428th was able to keep the Germans busy enough that upon their egress from the area, they noticed a group of P-47s come to their aid and attack the remaining exposed Fw190s. Does anyone have any idea who these P-47s belonged to? Thanks in advance.

Cheers, Gary Koch
