Well if you look at Martin Middlebrook's book, 'The Berlin Raids' you will see that quite often they did not take the direct route. For instance 23/24 Dec 1943 went South as if to the Rhur, then East towards Leipzig, and then North to Berlin and then more or less straight back.
Of course 1836 represents the direct round trip in km., but the actual trip was more likely to be at least 1,500 miles I would think.
