Re: Lt Col Hillslinger & Hurricane V6844
The Jabo's of 10/JG2 attacked HMS CALPE, this occured just before (13.10 v 13.18) the attack on BERKELEY which allows for some confusion, but the facts of the attack appear clear.
The crew of CALPE reported being attacked by 4x Fw190's, whilst those on BERKELEY (including it's commanding officer) reported that the fatal damage to their ship was inflicted by bombs from a Do217 (one of three observed). Additionally the Jabo aircrew reported hitting a ship that was already under a cloud of smoke, at no time was BERKELEY on fire, but CALPE had just been near missed by a Ju88 which caused a cordite fire.
Obviously there is no such thing as certain proof, but in my opinion the evidence points to the fighter-bombers near-missing CALPE and BERKELEY falling victim to an unidentified bomber.
