Without some sort of more precise location or date/month it's near impossible to answer your question.
Interestingly, the regions your dad has passed fell more under the 9th Air Force (USAAF) and perhaps also 1st TAF (American, with some French). Except in some French units, not many Spitfires within their ranks.

The RAF's 2nd Tactical Air Force with lots of Spitfires operated more in NW Europe and N Germany.

Given the location, maybe it was a French Spitfire?
