Re: P 38 Mission Known 13 February 1945

The 474th FG did fly some missions that day. The 428th FS flew two missions. The first one was supposed to be a rendevous with A-20 Havocs near Luxembourg, but contact with the bombers was never made due to the bombers arriving early. The nine 428th FS P-38s proceeded on an armed recce bombing a marshalling yard in Siegburg. The second 428th FS mission was an armed recce of the Siegburg-Siegen-Olpe-Gummersbach area. Weather proved too bad, but marshalling yards in two small towns in the vicinity of Limburg were hit. The 429th FS flew one mission. It was an A-26 escort/armed recce mission. The ten 429th FS P-38s did not make contact with the A-26s, but later attacked a bridge near Limburg. One locomotive was also destroyed by strafing. Hope this helps.

Cheers, Gary Koch (474th FG Historian)
