The tale you note is to be read in the Squadron Signal book, "Checkertailes"

" It was learned later that he had been injured when he was shot down and made a crash landing in Italy. Italian farmers pulled him from the wreckage of "Maty Norris", his P51C (aircraft number 61). They hid him from the Germans for two weeks but they were unable to bring in a Doctor to treat his wounds. He died of his injuries and they buried him. After the war , his family had his body exhumed and returned home for a final burial."
