Although considered to be an excellent in concept, the Mk.5 development and trials were hampered by harsh recoil, which exceeded the tolerance levels of the average trooper, and the rifle itself suffered from a “wandering zero” problem. It would shoot reasonable groups, but not always in the same place from one day to the next. A number of manufacturing solutions were trialled to solve this, but the issue was never satisfactorily overcome.

It was not issued to the Australian Army until late 1946, and was used in small quantities during the Malayan Emergency in 1947. It was phased out shortly afterwards.
