I've been away, done some reading and solved the problem - see next post.
To answer your question, I was quoting Peter Cook's reason for making a futile gesture in war;
"Perkins, I want you to lay down your life.
We need a futile gesture at this stage.
It will raise the whole tone of the war.
Get in your crate, hop over to Bremen, take a shufty, and don't come back".
