I spoke with an eyewittness who live west of Gardelegen in 2009. He saw the jumped out pilot and saw two US-Fighters attacking these parachuter hanging in the air. A lot of people ran to the parachuter after landing on the ground.
At the ground Josef Zwernemann was still at live. He get one big shot into his body and said that they are shooting at him at the chute. He died on the ground 20 minutes later and was transfered the same day by the Luftwaffe from Gardelegen airfield.

Rudiger - thank you. Did the eyewitness describe the fighters?
The 4th had red spinners and cowl bands, the 355th had white spinner and cowl bands - these are the only two 8th AF units in the area but the 9th AF 354th FG (also white spinner/cowl band) were in a big battle with both Fw 190s and Me 109s primarily north of Brunswick.
All of the 355th FG scores were 109s around Brunswick on the 8th so I doubt they were involved with Zwernemann's death.
