There should be some sort of document regulating the different shields. I've located an "Anweisung für die Anbringung von Halbfabrikatschildern" for the Ju 86 which gives details on what type of plate was to be used for each subassembly illustrated with a drawing of where it was to be placed on the subassembly.
This document also mentiones a "Flugzeug Abnahme-schield"which is in itself a suggestion that it might not be the same shield as the formal W.Nr.-plate placed somewhere else e.g. at the tail of the aircraft as is often seen.
This "Flugzeug Abnahme-schield" was attached on the outside left side below cockpit on Junkers aircraft - see Chris' photo on #3. Apparently DLH and RLM aircraft had different type of shields. Sometimes a second plate was placed below the original one if the aircraft was modified to a different version, thus receiving a new designation.
