The one victory he spoke the most of was his first. It was on his 6th combat mission and his strongest memory of air combat was attacking IL-2s or Zementbomber as he called them.
He said he was an acting Staffelkapitaen at the time, with Brendel as Gruppenkommandeur. He blamed Brendel for getting him shot down, the impression we got was that he respected Brendel's abilities as a pilot per se but not as a leader
