Re: Heinkel He 111 losses on 7th June 1942

Hi Adriano,

The claim by P/O Havey and F/O Wicksteed in Beau. X7946 of 600 sqd. is linked to the loss of Ju88D5 4U+DL 1748 of 3(F)/123 at 2314hrs on the 7th. Ff Oblt Wolfgang Bauming missing to dead buried Cannock grave 6.350, B Oblt Camillo Kleemen missing, Bf Fw Friedrich Fug found dead off Lands End 15-6-42, Bm Fw Otto Mayer missing. The Beaufighter was hit by return fire the crew ditched, they took to their dinghy and came ashore safe.
The incident was the subject of a small book published in 1944 called ''Fathers Heinkel'' by Berhard Blake Wicksteed DFC the Beaus. Nav. The Biographical notes say he was born in London in 1904 done various jobs and became a journalist working on the Daily Express befor joining the RAF.
The book has 160 pages but the shooting down and ditching is covered by pages 24 to 46,

Regards

Just saw Tony's reply and see there is a differnt serial no. for the Beau. I have not got my original source so cannot confirm - now corrected to X7946 as Tony's info.
