Re: Information concerning the loss of Oberfeldwebel Matthaus Zeltsperger - killed 01.09.1943

The Volksbund just got back to me on this one after around 9 months, indeed I had to have a good think as to why I'd asked them in the first place !

In fact their reply adds more to the mystery than it clears up.
In information from the Bundesarchiv, passed on to me by VB, Mathies (sometimes written "Matthäus"), Zeltsperger is listed as belonging to I Battalion/Gebirgsjäger Regt 100, yet his Erkennungsmarke has him as belonging to or seconded to Transport Staffel - General Kommando IX Flieger Korps. This is definately the same man, dates of birth and death, birthplace and the crash site are all identical.

He is believed to be buried in the civilian cemetery at Solotschiw in the Ukraine, Grave 5007.

Interestingly Zeltsperger's birthplace, Waging, is only around 30 kilometres from the Barracks of Gebirgsjäger Regt. 100 at Bad Reichenhall. It seems he started off as a Mountain Trooper and transferred to the Luftwaffe.
