Re: 23rd Fighter Group losses

This one sort of sticks out. The MACR number for the Jan 25, 1945 loss of an L-5 cannot be correct. The highest MACR number is 16607. Found it on Fold3. The file folder (first image) has 18889 written on it, but the MACR form itself is stamped 11889.

Franek,
The MACR system officially started on July 1, 1943. Occasionally you will find MACRs for events before then, but they were prepared later (usually a year or more). In addition, any deaths that occurred where the body was recovered (almost) immediately will not have a MACR, because there was no *Missing* Air Crew man. This would be covered in a Battle Casualty report, and I have never found a source for these, unless a copy was retained in the squadron or group records for the mission.

Enjoy!

Frank.
