I could be totally wrong in what I think I am seeing..... but here goes.

Looking at those pictures that show the inside view of the first panel on the left and in particularly looking at the release mechanism at the top of the panel, it seems to me the window had to swing out. It appears the pilot would just use the knob to push the release hooks slightly forward which would release the 3 hooks from the three pins at the top of the window. The window could not slide back as the first two pins would hit the 2nd and 3rd hooks, but the window could swing out. I don't think it would swing inward either as that would also hit the top release hooks.

Missing from the canopy but can be seen in photos such as this (save the Preview/Sample image and enlarge it ) is a 2nd "D" handle at the front left (probably another one on the right side also) which could be used by the pilot to slide the whole canopy backwards or forward once it was unlocked.
