Re: Dakota KG499 N°48 Sqn crashlanding on Sept 25 1944 in Belgium
Contrary local newspaper reports about a monument, the Dakota at Paal in reality must have been KG449 of No. 575 Squadron.
According ORB hit multiple times by Flak on return from medical supply droppings and forced landed at/near Paal (ORB: "1 1/2 miles NW of PAIL"). Apart from German flak, the AA fire from the Leopoldsburg area was believed to be from own troops, still according ORB
Pilot F/Sgt Clarke. He and crew/passengers (8 in total?) safe in landing, but an Army lorry that took them elsewhere overturned, resulting in a seriously injured despatcher and rest had minor injuries and bruises.
