8. Me 262 V5 W.Nr. 262 000 0005 PC+UE with a fixed tricycle undercarriage. Used 12 to 25 July 1943 to test two Rheinmetall-Borsig R 109-502 RATO engines of 500 KG thrust each to reduce take-off distances. It was found that by angling the rockets by 8 degrees to the flight attitude the boosters could reduce take-off by 340 metres to 510 metres. (O'Connel, p. 18.)

Me 262 Volume One, (1997), p.157 gives this caption: "The assembled entourage including Göring and Messerschmitt walk forward to inspect the Me 262 V6 on 2 November 1943."

10. Me 262 A W.Nr. 170303 V303 In December 1944 and January 1944, Fw. Heinz Herlitzius flew this Messerschmitt test aircraft at Lechfeld. The photo, a black and white copy of one of a number of colour shots, shows it equipped with two improved Rheinmetall-Borsig R 109-503 RATO boostersof 1000 kg thrust each. They were to help Herlitzius' Me 262 lift
two cement dummy 500 kg bombs into the air.
