I can echo what Larry said. The book (I have the hardcover edition) based on primary, archival materials and he did not hide the serious errors, committed by the Soviet leadership in many aspects (what a 'Stalinist' author would definitely do). I'm missing some analythical approach and explanations, which IMHO would be useful for the readers but in general, it is a serious scholarly work with many illuminating aspects so I would recommend it to anyone without hesitation. (There are several definitely translating errors which were more disturbing to me, but translating a large tome is always a demanding and challenging work).
