Re: TB-1 shot down by Finns 22 October 1942

Brian,
the TB-1 was shot down by A-A artillery at Kilpasilta AF base (Karelian Isthmus) on 29 (NOT 22!) October 1942 at 09.30 hours Finnish time. The aircraft had apparently lost its orientation entirely, and even tried to land. After touching the runway it however took off again, but the Finnish A-A units scored several hits in the fuselage and one engine, and the TB-1 crashed in flames to the ground. All abord (one Major, two Captains, one Sn.Lt and two NCOs - however no names are known) were killed. Investigation of the wreck established that the TB-1 was bound for Leningrad from Arkhangelsk, loaded with 8 mail bags in addition to the passengers.
